In the build up to the Geneva motor show, car makers far and wide, from Rolls Royce to Bugatti, have been beating the drum, doing what they can to put the spotlight on themselves when the ignition is turned on in Geneva. Today, we aim to do it one last time, with the brand new Pagani Huayra Roadster. 

There are two types of cars: one that gets you from place to place, and another that lets people know that you are going places. The Pagani Huayra is exactly the latter. With the coupe version of the Huayra in 2010, Pagani brought to the world a worthy continuation to the legendary Zonda. Named after Huayra-tata, a Quechua wind god, the Huayra was named the “Hypercar of the Year 2012” by Top Gear magazine, with all 100 examples sold out by February 11 2015. Not too bad for a vehicle with a base price of 850,000 euros.

Six years later, Pagani has finally shaved the top off, unveiling an open-top version in anticipation of the 2017 Geneva motor show- expected to be one of the biggest yet. The premise is simple: where there once was a roof, there is now a removable hard roof, constructed from a combination of carbon and glass. However, the execution is anything but. Ordinarily, removing the roof of a car meant adding weight in structure strengthening measures. This is not the case in the Huayra Roadster, which takes advantage of a monocoque chassis made from carbo-titanium to weigh in every lighter than the coupe version. This is truly, as Pagani founder Horacio Pagani said, “the most complicated project we have ever undertaken.”

Inside, the Roadster shares many similarities with the Coupe. Powered by Mercedes-AMG twin turbo M158 V12, the Pagani is capable of 764 horsepower and 740 pound-feet of torque. With a lighter body, the Roadster is capable of doing more with the same engine, giving it more power than ever before.

Want one? Sadly, you can’t have one. With a base price of over 2 million euros, all 100 examples of the Roadster have already been sold,  meaning that the Geneva motor show booth for Pagani would be little more than a ‘you can dream it, but you can’t touch it’ exhibition for motoring enthusiasts.
