The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" is a long range spy plane capable of going up to a speed of Mach 3, built for strategic reconnaissance that was operated by the United States Air Force during the 1960's. It was developed as a secret black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft by Lockheed and its Skunk Works Division. The SR 71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace any threats; if it so happened to detect a surface to air missile coming for it, all it had to do was accelerate and outfly the missile.

The SR-71 Blackbird is still the fastest plane that has ever flown and served an important role in history against different combat missions as a spy plane. Its first test flight was on December 22, 1964 and was never once hit by a missile during its 25 years of service.Though these awesome planes haven’t left the ground since before the turn of the century, they’re still worth all the recognition of being the fastest plane on Earth.

Another interesting fact is that the SR-71 required so much titanium that the United States had to create fake companies to buy Titanium from the USSR which was the biggest supplier of titanium and their enemy at that point of time.
