Connoisseur's Choice: The Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Master Chronometer Chronograph
March 07, 2016

In the buildup to Basel World 2016, Omega has released a new Speedmaster into the esteemed (and lately ever-growing) family: The Speedmaster Moonphase Master Chronometer Chronograph.

What we know about the Speedmaster Moonphase comes largely from within the watch at this point. Coming in at 44 mm, the stainless-steel Speedmaster features a brand new caliber 9904 movement which is 'Master Chronometer' and METAS certified, a more thorough and intense certification than the COSC. This makes it the first speedy and the second Omega timepiece after the new Globemaster to receive the METAS certification, ensuring that it is one of the most accurate Omega timepieces ever.

Astonishingly, Omega have said that the Moonphase indicator is so well rendered that upon closer observation, you can see a picture of a footprint on it (from the NASA Apollo missions). On the scale of the Moonphase disc, you will see “29.5” printed, as it takes that many days for a full lunar month. If you were to keep the watch running every day, it would only need to be corrected once a decade. Impressive accuracy indeed.

Set to premier in Basel World later this month, the new speedy is expected to cost about 9,000 Swiss Francs. A slight departure from the regular Speedmaster, but Omega has shown us time and time again that the Speedmaster series is one that rarely strikes a wrong note.
