RM 27-03 Rafael Nadal

June 09, 2017

Another year, another Roland Garros. If you need another reason to support Rafael Nadal at this year’s French Open, take 27-03 more: meet the brand new Richard Mille RM 27-03, the next edition of the collaboration between Mille and Nadal.

The unlikely friendship between watchmaker and tennis superstar began nine years ago, through a mutual friend. While both use different instruments in their craft, they share one thing in common: a spirit of excellence and hard work. Coming together, the duo have made a name for themselves with their highly shock-resistant and ultra lightweight watches that Nadal sports while schooling his opponents.

The brand new 27-03, however, takes this relationship to the next level. Made of Quartz TPT, a combination of resin and silica, the case lights up the court in yellow and red, colours that serve to represent the Spanish flag, Nadal’s home country.

The stunning, love it or hate it exterior, however, belies a masterful mechanical creation underneath. With a movement capable of withstanding shocks of up to 10,000 Gs, the 27-03 is fully expected to bear the brunt of Nadal’s killer forehands, and still keep time perfectly. To achieve this, Mille performed extensive shock tests on the watch using a pendulum impact tester that strikes the watch at a force of 10,000 Gs at various angles. With bridges made of titanium and a skeletonized baseplate from Carbon TPT, the movement is topped off with a tourbillon at the center of the watch.

The RM 27-03 will be on a limited edition run of 50 pieces, each retailing for a cool US$725,000. Discover more from Richard Mille.
