The Debonair: 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe by Ghia

February 15, 2016

Chances are, you have never seen a car quite like the 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Coupe. Chances are, you never will. One of but two models made by the legendary Italian coachbuilder Ghia and restored by Mike Fennel, it represents Italian flair and American engineering at their peaks.

Featuring Ghia's signature flair for the dramatic through design details such as the finned pontoon fenders, this model is distinguished from its sister Ghia coupe by "its front-end design, which features a unique grille with thin vertical bars finished in gold-anodized aluminum, as well as no front fender parking lights, different taillights and rear license plate holder, and two half “bumperettes” rather than a full front bumper."

Yet despite its age, the car is still maintained in fantastic condition, with only slight aging visible to the golden tan leather interior. The paint retains its shine with only minor scratches. With only 34,320 miles under its belt, this Cadillac still has power under its legs.

This car ranks as one of the great coachbuilt creations of its age, and its price, $1,430,000 in a RM Sotheby's auction, rightly reflects its place in the world.
