Connoisseur's Wishlist: Splinter, The Supercar You Never Knew You Needed

January 20, 2016

Wood is our only naturally renewable building material. Biodegradable, easy to produce and with a better strength-to-weight ratio than steel and aluminum, wood is an underrated and under appreciated material in this world of metal. The folks at Splinter sure know that.

Beginning as a graduate school project at North Carolina State University, Joe Harmon, the brains behind Splinter, sought to push the boundaries of wood as a material. Powered by two Rolls-Royce V12 engines and made almost entirely of wood, Splinter is truly at the cutting edge of motoring.

The chassis is made from a series of wood laminates, custom made for the vehicle and fit to form the overall structure. To achieve the super car like aesthetic of flowing lines, two looms were pioneered by the team to turn wood into a cloth-like material.

This is Splinter, high performance, cutting edge in its simplicity, and unabashedly wooden.
