The relationship between Parmigiani and Bugatti is an endearing one. Over the past 12 years, the pair have worked together to create a variety of stunning timepieces that have embodied the values behind both brands, starting with the Type 370. With the introduction of the new Bugatti Chiron, Parmigiani has continued the tradition with the release of the brand new Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti Type 390 Concept.
As a tribute to what is expected to be the most attention-grabbing car of 2016, the only thing normal about the Type 390 is that it tells the time in the traditional way; with two hands. The buck stops there. Amazingly, the rest of the watch is located within a cylinder, evoking the concept of an engine as it contains the movement's barrels, parts of its going train as well as a one-minute flying tourbillon.
The barrels of the watch have been engraved with the name of Louis Chiron, the namesake of the new car. Doing away with the traditional method of a flat configuration of consecutive wheels and pinions, Parmigiani have instead gone for a set of planetary gears which interact with one another to transmit power from the mainspring to the tourbillon.
Additionally, the brand uses an ingenious worm screw to allow for the three-dimensional movement. The worm screw acts to connect the hands to the main part of the movement, as well as driving the flat angular plane from the movement. This ensures that the watch has a curves and angles that you would see not see anywhere else; cylindrical on the movement end but yet flat and angular on the display end, allowing for optimal readability while driving.
Continuing the relentless innovation that has been the hallmark of the Parmigiani-Bugatti collaboration, the type 390's unique shape as well as bespoke movement looks to be a perfect fit for the new Chiron. Still in conceptualisation, the price is yet unknown but one can expect to pay a six-figure sum for it. Although if you can afford the new Bugatti, I'm sure that you wouldn't mind paying a little more for a matching accessory!
